The only viable alternative to overhead HVAC transmission lines that would preserve the value of private property, conservation easements, and national and state parks faced with the MARL/Gore-Doubs-Goose Creek and Valley Link transmission projects would be underground high-voltage direct current (HVDC).
It is feasible , it was proposed as an alternative to the PATH 765kV transmission line, in 2009, by Black & Vetch.
The cost for Underground HVDC has come done significantly since then and the installation space needed is even smaller. It can be installed underground along existing transmission easements or highway easements and has been used in multiple projects in the US.Read more about Underground HVDC here .
The mitigation costs of undergrounding these projects using HVDC could be paid for by data center taxes, data center impact fees or through new rate structures for large energy users such as data centers.

Jefferson County VOLT is fighting the Gore-Doubs-Goose-Creek segment of the MARL/Gore-Doubs-Goose-Creek transmission line and the Valley Link transmission line. Two counties in West Virginia - Hampshire and Jefferson are impacted by both transmission lines . If both lines are approved, 17 Counties through West Virginia will be impacted by these HVAC transmission lines. Both lines require new 200' easements through West Virginia more than 6,000 acres of property would be taken to host these transmission lines, while West Virginian's receive no benefit at all.
West Virginian's Against Transmission Line Injustice is leading the fight in West Virginia to oppose both the MARL segment of the MARL transmission line and the Valley Link transmission line. HVDC underground is applicable to all of the proposed 500kV and 765kV projects in Virginia.
If underground HVDC technology is adapted it will save thousands of private property owners across Virginia form eminent domain easement takings for transmission lines to provide energy for data centers!
President Trump has gotten a pledge from the AI big tech billionaires to absorb the electric price increases and all infrastructure costs rather than making the citizens pay for them.
Now is a good time to let him know its not just the cost its Our Land and Our Property!!! The Data Center companies to pay to underground the lines needed to support their business. Underground HVDC technology - along public roads , in existing easements and underwater.

Let President Trump know about the overhead HVAC transmission lines that and how it will impact you. There are 5 overhead HVAC lines proposed for the Mid Atlantic just to support Data Center Alley (3-500kV plus 2-765kV) This is @16,194 acres of private property - almost all of it subject to eminent domain takings! Destroying homesteads, farms and businesses.
Property owners in multiple counties in Virginia and West VA are facing two lines - the 500kV Mid-Atlantic Resiliency Link/Gore-Doubs-GooseCreek line, 154 miles on 185ft mono-poles and the 765vK Valley Link North line, 261 miles on V-structs with guyed wires.
Talk about how the overhead transmission lines will destroy your property, the equity in your home, quality of life about the harm from EMF’s.
Emphasize that the transmission developers refuse to consider an underground HVDC solution when they already know (2009 study) its doable. There multiple underground HVDC lines on the East Coast. Dominion has been awarded a 185 mile all underground HVDC line from Southern Virginia to the Northern Virginia data centers.
There is no excuse to not use underground HVDC technology, these are trillion dollar companies run by billionaires.
